Neelam Kothari:
Starting up: Hailing from a family that’s been closely involved with the jewellery industry it was no surprise that actress Neelam Kothari would turn to her roots at some point. Having been part of the jewellery business for the past ten years Neelam claims, “I’ve learned a lot from watching my father and brother at work. I did do a basic design course in Mumbai but I learnt a lot more on the shop floor.” She has recently opened her eponymous flagship store Neelam Jewels in Mumbai.

Career highlights: Though she hasn’t won any awards, Neelam believes the sincerest form of validation is from her peers and her seniors. “A couple of students from the Indian Gemmology Institute came to see me as their professor had recommended Neelam Jewels to them because of the craftsmanship and quality. To be recognised and respected is what makes it all very gratifying,” she reveals.

Signature look: She focuses on what she calls classic and timeless pieces that are also modern and trendy. “A woman should be able to wear her jewellery throughout her life. It’s pointless to spends lakhs on a piece that you can only wear when you’re young.”

Price range: Her range begins from Rs. 15,000 onwards.

Key clients: She caters to people of all walks of life especially industrialists and a large portion of Bollywood’s film stars.

Season’s must-haves: Mid-sized chandelier earrings are an absolute must-have according to her. “They should be small enough to wear daily and yet large enough to suit an evening occasion too and catch one’s eye.”

Personal favourites: As expected, her favourites too chandeliers. “When I work with precious stones I’m thinking about the price factor and saleability but with these I use a bit of diamonds, semi-precious stones and really have fun with my designs,” she smiles.

Timeless buy: Neelam has a penchant for big, eye-catching stones. “I’d rather spend my money on one big emerald, ruby or diamond that really turns heads rather than a huge set that I can only wear for a big occasion,” she says. When it comes to personal style this gal is a ‘rock’ chick!

Golden words: According to her, matching pendant and earring sets are a complete no-no. They are totally outdated. “If you are wearing a large pendant keep the earrings minimal and if you are wearing heavy earrings lose the pendant,” she states emphatically.”
