Tressed to Impress
Tired of taming flyaways, calming the frizz, or reviving limp strands? To help, Aparna Gupta speaks to experts for some sure-shot solutions

Revitalise dull hair:
For a head full of shiny mane follow this tip by make-up and hair expert, Clint Fernandes who has worked with zillion models: Once a month mix around 1/4 cup of vinegar in a full mug of water and rinse your hair thoroughly with it. Follow this by a stale beer wash. Rinse with water. This will make your hair shine brilliantly and take out all shampoo residues from the hair. Veteran beauty expert Shahnaz Husain advocates a tea-water-lemon rinse. Boil used tea leaves again in enough water. After boiling, you should have about 4 cups of tea-water. Cool and strain it. Then add the juice of a lemon and use it as a last rinse after shampoo.

Revive limp hair:
The problem with limp hair is not just that it’s flat but also that it’s weak. Hyacinth D’Souza, Friseur Service Manager, Wella India offers the best product from her kitty, “Wella’s Biotouch ‘Protein Mask’ (a conditioning agent) will strengthen the hair, and then use Wella’s High Hair styling product ‘Add Some Body’, which does literally that — adds volume — your should never look limp again!”

Soften rough hair:
If you have coarse, dry hair stay at least six inches away from blow dryers. Switch settings to cool settings to avoid further damage. Check if you are subjecting your mane to hot showers? Hot water makes hair dry and rough, says

Dr. Akshay Batra, Vice President, Trichological Society, London. His home remedy: Apply warm oil with lime and egg on the scalp. Wrap head in a warm towel. Leave it till it cools and wash thoroughly. Repeat it twice a week to soften the hair.

Make hair grow faster:
Despite your best care, your mane stubbornly stays at the same length? Dr. Preeti Sarverkar, Consultant Dermatologist and Cosmetologist, Kaya Skin Clinic suggests this pack: Grind fenugreek and mustard seeds to a fine powder. Soak in your regular hair oil, heat for 5 minutes and let it remain overnight before storing it. Massage your scalp with this oil every week. You could also try Kaya Hair Health Gel, a result-showing product rich in the powerful herb, Saw Palmetto.

Check hair loss:
Hair loss is often a symptom of some inner imbalance. Besides getting your medical checkup done, Dr Batra recommends a special diet. “Include more of wheat germ, milk and milk products, fish, eggs, white meat and SOYA BEAN. Soya bean not only is a good source of protein but it also acts as a DHT inhibitor (which could increase hair fall), thus reducing the DHT levels in the body. Along with protein, these foods are also high in vitamins B, an important nutrient for hair.”

Arrest premature greying:
While stress and hereditary factors cannot be negated, you can keep those white strands away by eating a diet rich in vitamins A, C and E. Dr. Sarverkar suggests having foods which are yellow, red or orange in colour such as beetroots, carrots, papaya and bell peppers. Another must-have in your diet should be wheat germ. Dr Batra suggests drinking a glass of buttermilk with 2 teaspoons of wheat germ. Curry leaves (Kadhi Patta) is also helpful in preventing premature graying of the hair. Shahnaz Husain suggests having the juice of one raw amla daily (mixed in a glass of water) to arrest premature graying.

Add a hint of glamour:
So you are not having a great hair day. The humidity is making your tresses its prey. You have no time to head for a wash and set your hair right. You can rescue the situation with a glittery accessory that would add an instant hint of glamour to any hairstyle. “Try satin ribbons for an elegant do. It looks extremely feminine and chic,” says hairstylist Agnes Chen of Butterfly Pond. For a more opulent look you could also use a pretty brooch to up the glam quotient.

Tame unruly curls:
Soft lively curls are set to dominate the trends this season. To tame unruly curls, Christiaan Georgio, international hair stylist who runs his signature salon at Grand Hyatt Mumbai, has a simple solution: After cleansing the hair, immediately towel-dry your hair followed a light application of a leave-in conditioner. Once again, make sure excessive amounts of conditioner are not used as it makes the hair limp during this season.

Hydrate dry, damaged hair:
Just as skin requires moisturisers, the hair wants conditioner to arrest damage by forming a protective film over the hair shaft, says renowned dermatologist and cosmetologist Dr. Rekha Sheth, partner Yuva Beauty Clinic. If you have long hair, gently comb through the ends with a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute the conditioner and detangle hair, she suggests. Reawakening Mer-rouge Hair Hydramasque (Rs. 1990) by Molton Brown leaves your hair soft, vibrant and manageable. Apply to towel dried hair and distribute evenly from root to tip. Leave on hair for 3-5 minutes and rinse. For chemically damaged hair we advise Label.M Intensive Conditioning Mask once a week. Leave it on for 20 minutes and wrap your hair in a warm towel. Result? Hydrated hair that gleams.

Contour a round face:
A good hair cut goes a long way in creating an illusion of a chiseled face. Melroy, Training Manger, Matrix has the best style option: Get a layered hair cut with a forward graduation to contour the round face. Style your hair with a side parting to give an illusion of height. Avoid a centre parting and tying all hair back away from the face.

Style long hair:
Though you end up letting your day down all the time, this season, bring in the style element says Christiaan. Experiment with ribbons and hair bands. Invest in a set of hot rollers of a good brand like Vidal Sassoon. Make sure the rollers are large in size. Apply rollers before starting to get dressed, by the time you have finished dressing and applying your make-up, your hair would be set into position and the rollers can be removed. You then throw your hair upside down, finger comb them, apply a light aerosol; throw back and finger comb into position.
