A cheat’s guide to look ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’
Aparna Gupta speaks to experts and make-up enthusiasts, and convinces them to share their best-kept secrets. So here are make-up moves that will help you look your dazzling best in a matter of minutes
For long-lasting make-up:
Rub a cube of ice on your face before using any make-up and then gently use it once you have worn your foundation. Dab it with a tissue. Alternatively, keep a can of Evian face spray in an air-conditioned room or in the fridge door. Before applying make-up, spritz a little Evian on the face, dab and allow to air-dry. For even more effective results try Refreshing Mist from Clarins’ latest range. The make-up will be long lasting and fresh for hours.

Tame unruly eyebrows:
Eyebrows define your face. Makeup artist Clint Fernandes reveals a master-trick, “Use a baby tooth brush to comb your eyebrows out and spray the baby brush with some hairspray and then comb through if your eye brows are too unruly.”

Radiance in a second:
To get flawless complexion that radiates, try a product that’s the life line of celebrities world over – YSL Touche Eclat highlighter (Rs. 1670). Don’t mistake it for a concealer which it is not. It is meant to reflect light making under-eye circles and creases less visible. What’s best?
The result is ‘naturally’ bright luminous looking skin.
Post application of lip colour use a hint of shimmer powder in the centre of the lips
Get glittering lips:
Covet those luscious lips with a hint of glamour? Post application of lip colour use a hint of glitter or shimmer powder on the lips. Using it just in the centre creates an interesting effect, asserts Clint. The play of textures of glossy lipstick and shimmer powder creates a stunning effect.

Multi-task your lip gloss:
A shade of pink lipstick tucked in your handbag will come to your rescue for after-work parties. Follow this simple tip by Clint: Apply a couple of dots lightly on the apples of the cheeks and blend out wards. It would be good to use a translucent powder over it to keep the colour in place and set the blush.

Fake slimmer figure:
This one is surely our favourite. Want to create an illusion of slimmer you especially as you slip into your knee length baby doll dress? Clint has a trick up his sleeve, “Using a dark-coloured bronzer on the inside of the arms and legs would give one a slimming effect. Be careful not to apply too much as it would stain your clothes.”

For baby soft lips:
Here’s a way to kiss chapped lips goodbye. Use a lip balm (Body Shop has some awesome ones) in the night before going to bed to ensure soft and supple lips all day. “To get texture-perfect lips use a lip balm 30 minutes prior to applying the lipcolour. This would keep the lipstick longer and make your lips look very good,” reveals Clint.
For texture-perfect complexion:
Prepare your skin for make-up with a primer. A primer texturises the skin in an instant, giving an even and soft finish. It’s an Ideal canvas for you to start your make-up. MAC Prep and Prime Face Protect SPF 50++ (price on request) are excellent as face primers to smoothen out the skin's texture, it helps prevent skin discolouration and premature ageing from damaging UV rays. “It really is a new wonder product. Your skin will be incredible if you use this after your moisturiser and before your foundation,” says Vimi Joshi, Senior Makeup Artist, M.A.C.
Look smashing at work:
The secret lies in keeping your skin hydrated and moisturised. Though a lot of women reserve their foundation for special occasions we recommend using one daily. The trick is to get the one right for you. Vimi suggests using a creamy compact foundation like MAC Studio Tech (price on request), so you can even out your skin tone and protect it from the dust and pollution outside. You can then add some Kohl, mascara and lip gloss. You will look professional and not too over done.
Get the J-Lo glow:
Go a little more bronze in your skin tone and make sure that your skin is highly contoured and sculpted. You can also try a Matte bronzer and add some shimmer highlights on the apples of your cheeks. Try Chanel’s Soleil de Tan (Bronzer). True to its tag line, it does light up the face with a subtle and airy ray of sunlight.
Let your body sparkle:
Ready to slip into a sexy dress? Prepare to fit the part of a dazzling diva. Use a bit of moisturiser mixed with shimmer powder on the body to make it shimmer and glow, says Clint. We absolutely loved the texture and feel of Chanel Poudre Cristalline
(Rs. 2850).
Bye-bye tired skin:
Nothing is more distressing to ready for a especial occasion after a long tiring day. But we are a wonder product which eliminates all signs of fatigue and facial features appear rested and smooth. Get your hands on Clarins Beauty Flash Balm (Rs. 1400), an instant pick-me-up for the skin. It promotes a radiant fresh complexion and long lasting luminous make-up. It’s an ideal treatment; before a busy day or an evening out. Can also be used as a mask to boost the skin or sensitised skins.
Fake fresh eyes:
For women who have short nights and long, busy days the Eye Revive Beauty Flash
(Rs. 1580) by Clarins immediately works to diminish the signs of temporary fatigue. Its gentle non-oily micro-gel texture is comfortable and gets easily absorbed leaving the eyes feeling fresh and rested. We also liked Eye-rescue Ultracool (Rs 2120) by Molton Brown — this cooling cream-gel eases away fine lines and soothe the delicate eye area. Eyes look and feel refreshed and renewed.
Perfect that pout:
For make lips appear fuller, outline them just beyond their natural contour; avoid dark colours and apply the desired lip colour. Finish by applying Clarins’ Instant light Natural Lip Perfector (Rs 800) on top; the 3D pigment optically promotes fuller-looking lips through the use of light while repairing and nourishing lips thanks to the high performance of skin care ingredients.
For scene-stealing lashes:
Perfect the art of creating long, lush lashes. Apply black mascara that gives you length, volume and hold up to the end of the day or night. “You can apply several coats of mascara, but you have to make sure that the lashes don’t stick together. I vouch for Volume Clubbing ultra black Mascara (Rs. 455) by Bourjois. To make brown eyes pop, apply on the end of the lashes a touch of blue mascara,” says Sibelle Buchholzer-Juen, International Makeup Artist, Bourjois.
Glam up your glance:
Strafford Brazanza, Chief Makeup Artist and Trainer, Lancome India, suggests to colour your eyes in lots of aqua’s, marines, coral/oranges and light blues. Trade your black khol pencil for coloured ones. “Remember that colour eyeliners should be used as an accent and NOT be played on the whole eyes. Coloured liners should not be used to steal the attention but should be used to complement the eyes and the personality of the person wearing it. Apply them at the corner of the eye for a hint of colour,” he adds.
French Manicure in a minute:
This one really rocks. To get those chic nails, grab your hands on YSL French manicure kit (Rs. 2290). The firm-tipped pen releases a pure white ink for tracing a flawless line on the nail tips that dries immediately. The lacquer pen applies a subtle pink shade on the nails with a mirror-like shine.
