In other words, one can choose to take your life in the direction you want and not always leave it to the vagaries of fate. While everyone might not agree with this, it’s difficult to ignore the burgeoning group of Indians who have joined the ‘lucky brigade’, thereby underscoring the fact that attempts are being made to re-align their stars.

Right from Bollywood celebrities who have been caught with their signature ‘lucky’ tactics (read Ekta Kapoor and the ‘K’ serials) to those who have valiantly tried to change the spelling of their names in order to have Lady Luck bestow her blessings upon them (Shobhaa De, Suniel Shetty), it is safe to assume that these negotiations with fate have been entered into, in order to change some sort of existing life pattern. And with many careers and personal lives picking up post the lucky charms, it might not be such a bad idea to try it out and see what all the fuss is about.

One way to do this is astrology-based ‘Zodiac jewellery’. With jewellery houses touting lucky stones as per the birth month, it might be beneficial to find out what really suits a particular person. For all the Aquarians out there (with a few Pisceans thrown in for good measure!), the Garnet is the stone of choice. A primarily reddish brown clear stone, the garnet emits a reddish glow and comes in various cuts and carats.

21 Feb to 20 March Amethyst
Said to have healing properties, these beautiful purple stones are must-haves for Pisceans. “Amethyst is actually said to have health benefits,” says Dhiraj Tejnani, of Tikamdas Hiranand and Co., Dhanji Street, “When properly used, it has actually helped some people cure themselves of Type II Diabetes.”

21 March to 20 April Aquamarine
Especially recommended for Arians, these translucent blue stones can range from a tint of light blue to a hue of a deeper blue. Although these are usually exposed to a procedure called ‘heat treating’ to remove the greenish tinge that some of them naturally have, they are almost always available in shades of blue.

21 April to 20 May Diamond
Diamonds don’t need any introduction and are best suited to Taureans. But you have to bear in mind the essential four C’s – Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat.

21 May to 20 June Emerald or Jade
Hailed by many cultures to be of great symbolic value, Emeralds are deep green in colour, and have been found to be of a higher value than even diamonds at times. And also, although Jade is most commonly associated with green, it is also available in shades of grey, yellow, white, orange, violet and black.

21 June to 20 July Pearl or Moon Stone
Pearl can be cultured or purely natural, and are designated for Cancerians. Pearls are distinguishable from other stones, as they are essentially organic, and are made when oysters coat foreign objects with nacre. Another option is Moonstone, which gleams pale blue at times.

21 July to 20 Aug Ruby or Star Ruby
Considered to be the King of Gems, Rubies are one of the most valuable gemstones today. Star Rubies are even rarer and they are given their name due to a mineral called ‘Rutilum’, which is found inside the Ruby. This mineral’s star shape within the confines of the Ruby, (also called ‘Asterism’), causes an enticing light effect.

21 Aug to 20 Sept Peridot
Virgo’s lucky stone is the Peridot (also pronounced Perry-doh). Peridot is a beautiful green-tinged translucent stone and unlike other stones, has the unique distinction of being found in only one colour. It is the iron content that essentially explains the deep green and light golden colour palette.

21 Sept to 20 Oct Blue Sapphire
Blue Sapphire is the selected stone for all Librans. Although available in other colours, blue is the mainstay of the sapphire brigade. Sapphires are also associated with sentiments of reliability and permanence.

21 Oct to 20 Nov Opal
Scorpios have the advantage of multiple hues in their lucky stones. Due to a phenomenon called ‘Opalising’, these gemstones actually change colour as per the play of light.
