Canadian-born model and actress, Lisa Ray, explains her passion for one-of-a-kind timepieces in a tête-à-tête with Veyoleen Mehrotra...

Tell us about your first watch.
I received my first watch as a five year old — a Mickey Mouse wristwatch given to me on Christmas.

How did you get hooked to buying watches?
Prior to my affiliation with Rado as their ambassadress, my ‘limited edition’ of watches contained only two timekeepers, the Mickey Mouse watch and a pocket watch. I picked up the latter on a trip to Paris. What appealed to me about this antique timepiece was its unique design. While my interest in watches surfaced only recently, my father has always been an avid watch collector. He acquired his first watch on a trip to Switzerland, as a student studying in London. It was a Rado watch.

Which are your favourite brands and Why?
I actually love Rado timepieces. Their watches have a clean and classic appearance that don’t overwhelm your outfit and personality. Its understated elegance allows your personality to play the lead role. Their designs are cutting-edge and yet classic. Moreover, the use of high-tech ceramics complements my active lifestyle.

do you have any special anecdote related to timepieces?
Recently at a restaurant in New York, a well-known Japanese chef stopped what he was preparing to ask me about my watch. He wanted to buy one for his wife! I was wearing the Sintra Jubilé White, which has a pure white dial surrounded with diamonds.
Another such incident occurred on my flight to Mumbai from Whistler, Canada, when I was talking to this gentleman sitting next to me. When I explained my relationship with the brand, he started on how his mother-in-law in Arizona was looking for a battery to replace the one in her Rado timepiece. He wanted to know if I could help him with it. He then mentioned that he is a member of the Olympic Committee. He asked if I could do something for the Canadian team at the Winter Games set to take place in Whistler. So now it turns out that I’ll be attending the Olympic Winter Games in some capacity for the Canadian team! The entire incident was a really strange coincidence, but I believe in such things and the synchronicity of it.

What kind of a style statement do your watches make?
My clothes and accessories are an absolute reflection of my personality — understated yet dynamic. When it comes to watches, I love the non-fussy, stylish kinds. But like my personality, my watches must have some unique element.

What kind of watches do you like?
Watches, for me, are the ultimate style-meets-function accessory. I prefer watches that are slim and durable yet stylish and individualistic. I dislike buying anything too precious because then you have to treat it very carefully. Since, I wear little jewellery, I choose to accessorise with my watch. For a casual gathering, I prefer a sleek timepiece. For a formal occasion, I like exquisitely-designed watches. When it comes to colours, I’m partial to black or white.

Have you ever gifted a watch?
Recently, I surprised my boyfriend’s mother with a Rado watch. This was during our courtship period and I was trying to be really nice. And, it worked like a charm so I would definitely recommend it to others. I also gifted a few watches on Christmas.

What is your favourite quote on time?
Inspired by John Lennon’s quote on life, I’ve coined one on time, ‘Time is what happens to you, while you’re busy making other plans’. It reflects my on-the-go lifestyle.
