How
did you get associated with the AngloGold Ashanti and World Gold
Association competition?
Actually what happened was that World Gold Council (WGC) came
to our college (SNDT University) and showed us an audio-visual production
about the competition. That really caught my eye and I immediately
started working towards it.
Tell us about the design you showcased at the competition and
what inspired you to do so?
The design comprised of necklace, bangle and waist belt. The
entire ensemble was called the ‘Summer Fiesta’. As the name suggests,
the design was inspired by the summer season and yes, Alphonso mangoes,
the most-loved fruit of the season. I used contemporary designing
to rope in traditional inputs. Also, I tried and included all the
possible manufacturing techniques. The traditional filigree work
and piercing is uniquely combined with contemporary techniques like
acid etching, textures, embossing etc. The finishing touch was given
by adding chains and enamelled droplets to it.
And what made you take up jewellery designing?
Well, that would be my inclination towards creativity and a
constant challenging environment to make sure that this creative
streak in me flourishes. That’s what made me take up jewellery designing
as a career option. Currently, I am studying jewellery designing
in SNDT University in Juhu. And the competition was actually my
first attempt at creating a jewellery product.
What inspires you in the creation process of your designs?
The beauty of things around me, the expectation of visualising
the created piece that’s there in my imagination, the natural elements
like fire, earth, sky and water inspire me and motivate me in designing
new elements. Besides, I’m very fond of Cartier and Harry Winston
because they somehow manage to match my imagination.
What would you say is unique about your designs and what kind
of jewellery are you most comfortable creating?
My designs appeal to both traditional and modern people simply
because I try and maintain balance between wearability and design.
I do not think any piece of jewellery is difficult to design. Also,
in case there’s something difficult, I take it as a challenge and
try to create something good out of it.
What according to you are the current trends in jewellery?
I feel designer pieces are big, ranging from normal necklaces
to pieces such as shoulder ornaments, waist ornaments, bejewelled
ties, skirts, sarees, blouses etc. It’s all about blending clothes
and jewellery.
How do you plan to charter your career in jewellery design?
I would love to tie up with some retail brand. After gaining
some experience in the industry, I would want to create and design
my own line of jewellery.
