Editor's note

A NEW BEGINNING

It was with a set of mixed feelings that we closed the first issue of this year. As the editorial team prepared for the special Valentine’s Day photo shoot, the city found itself to be the target of a terrorist attack, which was eventually declared as the deadliest the country had ever seen.

Unprepared for the onslaught that followed, the first few days caught people in a dazed stupor. But gradually, receding patience and increasing anger mobilised the residents of the city. The saying that ‘As long as there is life there is hope’ was probably never so true. As we work towards and hope for lasting change, it is this very emotion that propels us to celebrate every moment. Given this scenario, we found ourselves swept up in our theme for the issue, eagerly looking forward to St. Valentine’s Day.

There are many facets to love and an obvious association is that of romantic love. In fact, our photo feature titled ‘Colours of Love’ marks the season of love and the advent of spring and all things beautiful. This leads us to our jewellery showcase that dazzles and shines with a collection of bijoux d’amour. Reminiscent of starry nights, frothy champagne, the little black dress and strawberries ‘n’ cream, jewellery has never looked so sumptuous. An inherent aspect of Valentine’s Day is the practice of gifting. Read ‘Cupid’s Choice’ for a host of options on gifts for him, her and both—our well-researched suggestions are bound to get you

compliments. In fact, for more gifting ideas, don’t forget to read our cover story titled ‘For the love of…’ as we examine the interpretations by watchmakers and jewellers alike. Some of the watches effortlessly blend the jubilant aspect of romance with timekeeping functions. Jewellery, on the other hand, makes a play for fun and warmth with heart-shaped motifs and splashes of red.

With every issue, it is our endeavour to help you keep luxurious time. In watch essentials, fashion designer Gavin Miguel highlights the trendiest elements in watches today and suggests that you keep it trendy yet understated this Valentine’s Day. On the other hand, if you feel like celebrating this day with something other than hearts and Cupid with his ubiquitous bow and arrow, you should head for the showcase section. Presented here is an array of enamel dial watches that promise a completely different brand of romance. The fact that even actress Bipasha Basu considers watches to be great gifts might also interest you. Read celeb speak for more such revelations from her. As we wait in anticipation for the 37th edition of BASELWORLD, you can all look forward to our indepth coverage of SIHH 2009 in our following issue.
